There are many effective approaches to therapy, and whilst my work draws upon a variety of modalities, I predominantly practice Relational Gestalt Psychotherapy. This is because it has the capacity to achieve the sort of meaningful and lasting change that clients hope to achieve from therapy, whilst honouring the complexity of being human. Rather than seeing people as a collection of symptoms to be classified and fixed, or worse still subdued and medicated, Gestalt psychotherapy views each person holistically taking into consideration all aspects of their beingness, including mind, body, soul, and the context of their environment.
Gestalt psychotherapy is based on the understanding that many of the ways we think, feel, and relate to ourselves and others are shaped by our early relationships and life experiences. When our early environment provides consistent care, emotional safety, and opportunities for healthy connection, we tend to develop ways of relating that support resilience, confidence, and continued growth.
However, if our formative years are characterised by inconsistency, neglect, emotional unavailability, trauma, loss, or other adverse experiences, we naturally develop creative ways of adapting in order to cope and survive. These adaptations are not signs of weakness, they are often intelligent and necessary responses to the circumstances we faced. While they may have helped us navigate difficult experiences earlier in life, they can later leave us feeling stuck, disconnected, overwhelmed, or caught in repetitive patterns in our relationships, work, and everyday life.
For many people, these relational patterns operate largely outside of conscious awareness. Rather than recognising the patterns themselves, we tend to notice their consequences, such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, emotional overwhelm, conflict in relationships, or a persistent sense of loneliness and disconnection.
This is where Relational Gestalt Psychotherapy offers something unique. Rather than focusing solely on talking about your experiences or changing your thoughts, it pays close attention to what is happening in the present moment, including what emerges within the therapeutic relationship itself. Together, we become curious about your emotions, thoughts, bodily sensations, and ways of relating as they naturally unfold during our work together. This can bring long-standing patterns into awareness in a way that feels immediate, meaningful, and deeply relevant to your everyday life.
Awareness is at the heart of Gestalt psychotherapy because lasting change is difficult without first understanding what is shaping our experience.
As these patterns become clearer, new possibilities begin to emerge. Rather than remaining bound by automatic ways of thinking, feeling, and relating, you have the opportunity to experiment with new ways of responding that feel more authentic, flexible, and aligned with who you are and how you want to live.
The goal is not to "fix" you or help you become someone different, but to support you in understanding yourself more deeply. From this greater awareness comes greater choice and with greater choice comes the possibility of meaningful and lasting change and naturally symptom reduction.
