About myself and my approach

About Kate Zammit

As a relational Gestalt psychotherapist, I feel genuinely grateful to do work that I love and feel both humbled and honoured to sit with people during some of their most vulnerable and authentic moments. My psychotherapy practice in Carlton and Essendon is informed not only by my professional training but also by my own lived experience of a personal therapeutic journey. I understand what it’s like to sit on the other side of the room, and I have a deep appreciation for how difficult life can feel at times. This, coupled with my belief that everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, gender expression, sexual orientation, religion, or ability deserves a safe space to be seen, heard, and understood, is what inspires me to offer accessible and affordable psychotherapy.

Outside of work, I am passionate about living a simple yet meaningful life with my partner and children, doing what I love, enjoying the present moment, and nurturing authentic connection. These values deeply inform the way I attempt to show up in my practice and in the world.

My Approach

Unlike more conventional forms of therapy that often focus on diagnoses, managing symptoms, or analysing problems, my approach is grounded in Gestalt, which means therapy with me is real, authentic, and relational, and gets to the heart of the matter. I do this by paying close attention not only to what is being said, but also to your emotions, bodily or somatic experiences, and the relational patterns that emerge between us, in the present moment. This helps us to uncover and address the core issues beneath the surface and identify what is needed to move beyond them, leading to genuine and lasting change.

Above all, therapy is a collaborative process, and as such I place an emphasis on the development of a healing and supportive therapeutic relationship, as research consistently shows that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes in therapy, often more so than any specific intervention or technique. Whilst my approach is warm and non-judgemental, it is also direct and honest, as I will often gently challenge patterns that may be keeping you stuck. This is because I believe meaningful change happens through genuine human connection, not through detached analysis or simply talking about problems week after week.

Qualifications and memberships

I completed my training at Gestalt Therapy Australia (GTA), where I studied Gestalt Psychotherapy for four years. During this time I completed my internship, where I did over 100 face-to-face supervised client hours. I have a deep respect for Gestalt and its gentle yet effective approach for creating positive change in a safe, non-judgemental, and non-pathologising way.

I am a professional member of the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).

PACFA Registration number 32002.

As part of my continued professional development, I undertake ongoing professional supervision regularly.
